169 More Burmese Workers Arrested for Illegally Entering Thailand

Authorities in Thailand have arrested 169 more Burmese workers for illegally crossing the border, according to local news reports. The arrests occurred early on the morning of January 31 as a large truck with a trailer carrying the illegal migrants passed through a checkpoint in Baan Luang Township, Kanchanaburi Province.

In addition to the 169 Burmese nationals, two Thai drivers were also taken into custody. The incident marks another significant crackdown on illegal border crossings amid heightened security measures along the Thai-Myanmar border.

One Burmese worker currently residing in Thailand commented on the ongoing situation: “When the inspection is so strict, you shouldn’t come from the lower road. These days, many Burmese are being arrested. It seems like they are only arresting Burmese. I know that in my own country, there are military service issues and unrest, but if you come illegally, you should listen to the information carefully. Brokers should not send you because they have earned money. If you come with difficulty and spend money, you will be in trouble.”

The arrests come just two days after nearly 200 Burmese workers were detained at three different locations on January 29 for illegally entering Thailand. Those caught are being processed under Thai law and will be deported back to Myanmar.

Since the start of 2025, Thai authorities have significantly intensified inspections along the border, primarily to combat illegal activities, including human trafficking. As a result, more Burmese migrants attempting to cross into Thailand have been apprehended.

With more than 160 Burmese workers arrested in a single day on January 29 and now 169 more on January 31, the situation highlights the growing challenges faced by Burmese nationals seeking work in Thailand amid ongoing political and economic instability in Myanmar.
